William "Bootstrap Bill" Turner is a fictional character from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
He is primarily known as the estranged father of Will Turner, a pivotal character throughout the franchise. Bootstrap Bill started as a respectable man before falling into a life of piracy.
He served as a crew member aboard the Black Pearl under Captain Jack Sparrow. During a mutiny led by Hector Barbossa, Bootstrap Bill was the only crew member to defend Sparrow. As punishment, Barbossa tied a cannon to his foot and threw him overboard, believing him dead.
Instead, Bootstrap Bill was eventually rescued by Davy Jones and forced to serve on the Flying Dutchman for eternity as penance for taking Jones' life-saving coin. His appearance gradually transformed into a hybrid of human and sea creature as a result.
He plays a significant role in the plot of the second and third films, struggling with his loyalty to his son and his servitude to Davy Jones.
